The Ghettosound band is called Azania
Azania is simply the best reggae band in South Africa. The band consists of six brilliant musicians hailing from the townships of Cape Town.
The band has played most well known venues in South Africa and has shared the stage with international Reggae superstars Burning Spear, Culture, Mutabaruka, The Wailers, Buju Banton, Benjamin Zepheniah and Macka B.
The band has also backed a number of international reggae artists like Benjamin Zepheniah and Dawit Manelik Tafari, who produced and featured in their debut album “A True Story”. They also backed the UK based Jamaican artist/singer Vivian Jones on his recent tour to South Africa. The band also backed Kashta Manelik Tafari of the Ras Ites while performing in Cape Town in 1999.
On the recently released, “Away from Home album” the band features two of the best South African horn players, Ezra Ngcukana who performed recently with the Ngcukana Brothers at North Sea Jazz festival in Cape Town and Evan Mazuze of Tucan Tucan, a Cape Town based Jazz Band.
The band recorded and co-produced an album with Vivian Jones, called “Tribute to Gugulethu Seven” that will be released in South Africa, Jamaica and the UK later this year.
The band also played and produced the music on some of the songs on the album “Sweet Reggae Music” of Umojah 2, another UK based Jamaican artist who has done some songs for Macka Dub of Green Beat music. The band is also behind the music on a soon to be released album, of a South African Reggae band the Dread Kings, produced by Johnny "B" White who produced the album with the hit song “Picture on wall” by Natural Ites and the realistic Band.
The Bass player Wakhile Xhalisa has lived and played in Europe with a South African Reggae band Makwerhu and has played many Reggae and Jazz festivals all over Europe.
